It appears that disgraced kwaito star and rape convict Brickz is already out of prison after serving less than 4 years of his 15-year sentence for rape. This comes after photos of the musician, real name Sipho Charles Ndlovu, started circulating on social media.
In the photo, Brickz appears to be in a SABC studio and is dressed casually while posing for the camera.
South Africa’s Department of Correctional Services has not yet commented on whether it granted Brickz parole and the conditions under which such parole was granted.
If parole has indeed been granted, women’s groups and activists are unlikely to be happy about the decision, seeing as the musician has barely served a third of his sentence.
In October 2017, Brickz was sentenced to 15 years in prison after he was found guilty of raping a 16-year-old relative in 2013.
Even though Brickz maintained that he was innocent, he was convicted of the crime. In passing sentence, the magistrate noted that the musician had not shown remorse for his crime, and the court has a duty to protect the freedom of women.
Brickz legal team later appealed against both the conviction and the sentence.
He was briefly released on bail in April 2018 after paying R80 000 at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, pending the appeal against his rape conviction.
When he lost his appeal in the South Gauteng High Court in August 2018, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) ordered him to return to prison to resume his 15-year prison sentence. – iHarare
